Standardize
Equipment and Services.
Engineers always
have their pets and biases. We all do. It is critical to get them on cross
functional teams to standardize parts and equipment. A goal of 80% standardized
parts is realistic in many industries. Difference in brands (suppliers), OEMs,
and parts must have significant added value to be justified. Try to measure
quality with an obscure balkanization of OEMs and different parts (ha). Good
luck. The same holds for services. Standardize them. One of the guiding
principles of industrialization is standardization. Don't lose sight of it! Pursue
it. Standardize whenever possible.
